Senior Geotechnical Inspector Licensed Science Officer (Designated Professional Engineer) 4 One full time, permanent position is currently available and can be performed from Victoria, Vancouver, Kamloops, Prince George, Smithers, or Cranbrook.

An eligibility list may be established.

Although this position has onsite office based requirements, it may temporarily be performed virtually due to the current extraordinary circumstances related to COVID-19.

This may remain in place until physical distancing advisories are lifted.

An excellent senior opportunity for a dedicated Professional Engineer The Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division (MHSED) provides oversight of the mineral exploration and mining sector during all stages of mine projects.

The division includes: the Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines; the Mine Audits and Effectiveness Unit led by the Chief Auditor; the Abandoned Mines Branch; and the Regulatory Management and Enforcement Branch.

The Code Review Secretariat in MHSED supports the ongoing work of the Code Review Committee.

This position is part of the Office of Chief Inspector of Mines.

The Chief Inspector is responsible for: mining compliance oversight; programs required to protect the health and safety of workers and members of the public from risk factors associated with mine operations across the province; and mine emergency incident response.

The Senior Geotechnical Inspector leads the geotechnical compliance management activities for the Ministry and provides expert advice to the Manager, Technical Compliance, and the Chief Inspector of Mines.

The position advises the Mines Competitiveness and Authorizations Division (MCAD) Director of Technical Operations and the Manager of Geotechnical Engineering on compliance issues and status of geotechnical matters that may pertain to the design, review and permitting of a wide range of mine site components and structures located throughout the province.

This includes tailings impoundments, waste rock dumps, open pit slopes, underground workings, water management facilities and dams, geohazards and building foundations.

The position helps manage risks to the environment and to the safety of mine personnel and members of the public.

Job Requirements: In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in geological, mining or geotechnical engineering.

Preference may be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree or PhD in geological, mining or geotechnical engineering.

Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a fully qualified Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).

Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional Engineer in another Canadian jurisdiction, and able to transfer that membership to the EGBC within 6 months of employment.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.

Minimum 5 years post-graduation experience in geotechnical engineering or mining engineering.

Preference may be given to those with more years of this experience.

Preference may be given to those with this experience that includes underground design.

Preference may be given to those with supervisory experience.

Preference may be given to candidates with compliance and enforcement regulatory experience.

Preference may be given to candidates with experience with issues management, problem solving, and/or providing expert advice to industry clients, senior management, internal staff and/or other agencies.

Provisos: A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.

Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice.

Must be able to climb ladders, walk up and down steep ramps.

Work in underground conditions using appropriate protective equipment and in environments where exposure to chemical vapours, noise, dust, heat and cold are present.
